Poo Farm Visit

Next week our class is visiting the Western Treatment Plant as part of our inquiry into Water and Local Drains to The Bay.

Here is the link.
http://www.melbournewater.com.au/content/sewerage/western_treatment_plant/western_treatment_plant.asp

The plant treats about 60% of Melbourne's sewage. Some Melbournians call this the Poo Farm!
The plant is considered an environmental and technical innovation.

The site-
Recycles about 37,000 million litres of treated water plus an extra 17,199 million litres for onsite conservation
Generates its own electricity (biogas)
Supports tens of thousands of local birds

Save water! ( POP-Anya, Izdihar, Alexis)

Pay attention to how you use water. The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth, you are doing something good. Got a leaky toilet? You might be wasting 200 gallons of water a day! Try drinking tap water instead of bottled water, so you are not wasting all that packaging as well. Wash your clothes in cold water when you can.

Rubbish is very bad!

Our current landfills are rapidly filling up and there is a limit on how many new landfills we can build. Landfills are dirty, smelly, noisy and dangerous. They cause a lot of traffic (bin lorries) and can cause serious environmental problems – no one wants a landfill open near where they live!

Trees Call For Help! (By Group KRTT)

Trees are continuously cut down by us humans everywhere in the world. They are used to make paper, furniture and many others.

In our daily lives, we waste paper by writing only on one side and not using the other side. Then, we took another piece of paper and continue to write on only one side.

By doing this, we waste a great amount of paper. Have you ever wondered how many trees are cut down each week?

There are many ways to actually save paper.
1. Use both sides of the paper. 2. Reuse and Recycle

Did you know climate change is really bad?:)

The state of the world is in our hands and it is up to us to make changes for the better. Many people think that one person cannot make any difference. Together we can. In Australia most household try to conserve energy. This is because the cost of electricity and gas is always increasing. All households in the cities in all States have a fortnightly collection of recyclable items.

At school we recycle paper, but we are always looking to do more.

Here is one of our poems...

All the animals and their homes are being destroyed

Now this is what everyone is trying to avoid

Koalas are dying

But to keep them alive, we have to keep on trying

The world is getting really hot

It looks like the world has forgot

All this chaos must stop

Soon sea levels will rise to the top

1/3 of Bangladesh is under water

Wow this world needs to get in order!
